Training Courses Happening in 2024

Aquaculture in Shared Waters

Since 2013, Aquaculture in Shared Waters (AQSW) has helped hundreds of fishermen, farmers, and professionals start and improve shellfish and seaweed businesses. Check out the AQSW website to find out about training opportunities available in 2024.

Aquaculture Program & Apprenticeships: WCCC

This is a new program at Washington County Community College (WCCC) with a selection of courses covering many different aspects of aquaculture. From Exploring Careers in Aquaculture to Biosecurity to Applied Techniques in Aquaculture, you can take individual classes, or accrue credit to graduate with a workforce certificate. Developed to be flexible, with many remote learning opportunities. 

Aquaculture Apprenticeship Program: GMRI, MAA, & SMCC

Maine Aquaculture Association, the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, and Southern Maine Community College have partnered to offer this new pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship positions are available at six (6) different farms across the midcoast and southern Maine. These are hands-on, farm-based positions. 

MMA Aquaculture Certificate

MMA is launching a Mariculture Certificate in April 2024 which equips participants with production, entrepreneurship, and business skills necessary to be a successful aquaculture business owner.

Internship Programs

Maine Career Catalyst coordinates the Aquaculture Pioneers Program, a certified pre-apprenticeship connected to the MAA/GMRI apprenticeship program, which connects participants ages 16+ with a paid summer work experience for a host employer. This internship opportunity also provides networking and professional development opportunities.

Universities

Several universities in Maine offer degrees related to coastal studies, marine science, food and agricultural sciences. If you are interested in pursuing a Bachelor’s or graduate degree, check out websites for individual universities, in particular University of Maine, University of New England, and Maine Maritime Academy.
